7 Types of Leadership Power

2019 leadership talk time Feb 12, 2019

What Does Power Mean to You?

Power means many different things to different people. For some, power is seen as corrupt. For others, the more power they have, the more successful they feel. For even others, power is of no interest at all.

The five bases of power were identified by John French and Bertram Raven in the early 1960’s through a study they had conducted on power in leadership roles. The study showed how different types of power affected one’s leadership ability and success in a leadership role.

Power and Authority

Leadership within organizations is only attainable through the combination and use of power and authority. As discussed by John Kotter (1985, p.86) “power is the ability to influence others to get things done, while authority is the formal rights that come to a person who occupies a particular position, since power does not necessarily accompany a position.” Problems sometimes arise when power is imposed without the backing of...

After Action Review for Angelaā€™s Literary Lounge Book Selling Opportunity

According to Peter Drucker,  the man who is often credited with inventing modern business management writing 39 books on the subject.

One of my favorite business quotes is "If you can't measure it, you can't improve it."

We know it's nearly impossible to know whether you've met your weight loss goal without first getting on the scale and pulling out a measuring tape.  This allows you to acknowledge your phases of improvement.

This is a follow up segment to my 01.15.2019 article titled, "10 Things to Consider When Showing Up for a Booked Event. Read it HERE.

Prior to driving to Jacksonville, Florida from Georgia last week, I thought through the 10 things I should consider in order to be successful at this book selling event.

BACKGROUND:  I was invited to serve as a Featured Author in the Literary Lounge at a conference sponsored by the members of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc.,'s Statewide conference. The conference attendees were members who resided in the...

10 Things to Consider When Showing Up For a Booked Event

As I pack my car for this weekend's Featured Author event, I wondered if I had considered everything that could make this a successful and worthwhile trip.

Booking a conference or meeting venue can create a bit of anxiety, especially the first time. In anticipation of being asked to present at hundreds of potential conference venues over the next few years, I put together 10 Things to Consider When Showing Up for a Booked Event.

The list of things to take into consideration are not in order of priority nor is this an exhaustive list of every single concept or relevant topic.

1. Why were you invited?

Focus on bringing value for the reason you were invited to participate. In order words stay in your lane. Ensure you are familiar with the overall mission and objective of the event. Determine where you fit and then show up and show out

2. Before, During, and After Tasks

Take some time to document relevant tasks that you must accomplish in three different...

Happy New Year 2019

2019 holiday new year Dec 31, 2018

Dare to be great?

Is it really okay to level up?

You gosh darn right it is.

Some of the reasons you see the world like you do is because of your standards, boundaries or lack thereof coupled with your level of consistency when working towards a goal, the company you keep, the folks you allow to pour into you and how you prioritize your time.

Decide how you'll show up in 2019. Wherever you parked in 2018; below, at or above your personal expectations, it's time to take it to the next level of greatness.

I'm rooting for you,

Angela

You Ready to Detox from Sugar for 14 Days?

We're doing a 14 day sugar detox. We begin on Tuesday, January 1, 2019!

Sugar adds mouth smacking favors to our food and drink that it has become almost unthinkable to go without added sugar.  Spoiler alert: We can still enjoy our food and drink without piling on addictive sugars.

Why Do a Sugar Detox?

It's time for a reset. If the national statistics are correct, on average we are eating and drinking about 150 pounds of sugar a year. We tend to eat mindlessly and hurriedly as we rush through our busy lives. The food industry offers larger portion sizes filled with more sugar and salt then a few decades ago. The sugar is added to improve the overall taste of the food and the salt is added to ensure the food last during transport from the fields and factories to the grocery stores and restaurants.

Most sugary foods are a poor source of vitamins and minerals, which are essential for a healthy metabolism and normal body function. During a sugar detox plan, you will...

Merry Christmas 2018

2018 christmas holidays Dec 17, 2018

I'm pretty sweet most days, however, this time of year seems to bring out the real softy in me.  I often think about the good ole days when during my childhood when we laughed out loud all of the time.

Even though we lived below the poverty level, all of our basic needs were met. Who knew love, sweet potato pie, and red kool-aid was all we needed?

I feel blessed that my mother, Hattie Mae encouraged belly aching laughter in our home.  I pray you and yours are creating fabulous memories the ones my five siblings and I created all those years ago.

What Christmas memories are you creating?

Merry Christmas to you and yours,

As always, I'm rooting for you. Learn more about me

Happy Thanksgiving 2018

2018 holidays thanksgiving Nov 20, 2018

Gratitude is my watchword during this season of Thanksgiving.  I'm grateful for the laugh out loud experiences as well as the over the top scary ones we've endured over the past few months.  It seems that we are being set up for something marvelous in the near future and for that I'm grateful!

I'm grateful that my back, butt, gut, and mind are all stronger than they were this time last year. I'm grateful for an active life, working limbs, and just enough excitement during this Thanksgiving season.  I'm learning to take it all in and clear my calendar from the many itty bitty activities to the experiences that give me life.

I'm grateful that my favorite teenager is finding his footing. I love him from my soul even though he's as hard headed as a box of rocks. I count among my gazillion blessings that of being Ryan's mom as the tip top of the top top! #winning

I grateful for the opportunities that are presenting themselves to us.

Happy Veterans Day 2018

November 11, 2018 is the 100th anniversary of the end of World War I fighting at 11 a.m., November 11, 1918 (the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month). The day became known as “Armistice Day.” In 1954,  Congress passed the bill that President Eisenhower signed proclaiming November 11 as Veterans Day.

As a reminder, Veterans Day is day set aside to honor men and women who served in one of the branches of the US Armed Forces during both peacetime and in times of war or military conflicts. We honor men and women in every military specialty to include those who deployed to a foreign country as well as the men and women who remained stateside during their time of service. I'm grateful for every single veteran,  whether they served for 30 days or 30 plus years.  The point is they are part of the less than one percent of our great nation who has served and each one is indeed a military veteran.

The Armed Forces includes all five branches;...

The 6 things I learned from 6 people in 2017

2018 winning or learning Nov 10, 2018

I keep learning and growing with the help of amazing people who cross my path. I love the fact that I retired from the greatest Army on the planet because now I find that I am becoming more of myself.

Review the articles of the six people I learned from in 2015 and 2016

I remain unapologetic about my thoughts on learning and winning. I do not believe we lose, I believe we simply learn from our experiences.  In the year 2017, I learned a lot about myself and others.

Lynn Horton

Lynn reinforced what I had already known; people are more alike than different. We met in the dental clinic waiting room and talked as if we had known one other for years.  As a result of meeting Lynn, I was invited to serve as the Memorial Day Speaker for the City of Senoia, GA.  I'm grateful to have met such a wonderful person.
