Brought to you by Angela M. Odom, a retired Army colonel turned solopreneur
After retiring from the greatest Army on the planet, getting my son settled in our new, more stable environment, and starting a personal development training company, I felt compelled to share my Soldiers’ stories. ‘BRONCO STRONG: A Memoir of the Last Deployed Personnel Services Battalion’ depicts support Soldiers grinding out a 15 month extended deployment in Iraq amidst the chaotic backdrop of the complexity of change.
I attempt to answer the longing questions of daily life in Iraq during the Iraqi Surge……..
It’s a fact that an overwhelming majority of Americans killed or physically wounded in the major conflicts since the Revolutionary War reside among occupational specialties of Infantry, Armor, Artillery, and Aviation. This is what we learn about in books and these are the stories we watch at the movie theater, or on YouTube and Netflix, the tales of those men whose military occupational specialty is thought of as being “outside the wire.” They are usually portrayed as valiant warriors who are kicking in doors, diving on a grenade to save their buddies, or shooting their way out of a heavily contested firefight. These Soldiers, and they are true heroes, are glorified because of their contribution to major combat operations.
This isn’t the story I’m sharing with you today.
Today I want to share the story of my Soldiers. I want you to know that these lives mattered and they still matter to so many of us who hurt for their loss each and every day. I can promise that the number of copies sold of this text is irrelevant. It does not matter to me in the slightest. What matters is that my Soldiers’ collective stories are shared.
I want to describe this traumatic events from their vantage point and to share what those days were really like. I want to answer some of the questions I know the children and family members of my Soldiers are asking about their loved one’s time in Iraq. I want you to know that being given the opportunity to share this story is an honor; one I do not take lightly.

I don’t read ‘military’ book… But….
I don’t usually read military-type books, but something about this woman’s voice really resonated with me when I saw the video promo for Bronco Strong. So I put aside my reservations and read the book, and I am so glad that I did. The author brings a level of humanity, love and compassion to the story of her soldiers that you don’t normally expect to encounter when you think ‘military’… we tend to be glued to the stereotypes of ‘tough guys with guns’, who are trained to be unemotional… the author shows us that this is not the case, and though they are all indeed well trained, they are an emotional, compassionate troupe… I mean, who’s ever heard of soldiers hugging their commanding officer? Say what??? It is very clear from the writing and the ‘voice’ that Col. Angela M. Odom cares deeply about her fellow human beings, and loved, cherished and respected her soldiers. She never wants to hog the limelight for herself… her stories are all about her team. She even dedicates chunks of their personal stories and in their voices, towards the end of the book. I don’t mind admitting that tears slid down my face when I read some of them…
The book will obviously resonate with anyone in the army, but I think there is a whole new army out there who will love (Retired) Col. Angela M. Odom as much as her team did. I came away deep admiration for a woman with such strength, courage and compassion… thank you so much for sharing your story, and the story of your soldiers. Highly Recommended! - Maria
